Disable Cell Drag and Drop

Summary: Prevent from accidentally moving cells around your Microsoft Excel 2003 spreadsheet.

If you place your mouse pointer directly on the side of a cell in Microsoft Excel 2003, it should change from an arrow or plus sign cursor into a four-sided arrow. Then, if you click and hold the left mouse button down, you can drag the cell elsewhere in the spreadsheet. This way, you don't have to retype information if you need to move data from one location to another.

Many people find cell drag-and-drop useful, but others see it as an accident waiting to happen. It's very easy to move data you didn't want to move, possibly overwriting existing cells. So, if you wish to disable this feature:

1. Click "Tools" - "Options".
2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the "Edit" tab.
3. Uncheck "Allow cell drag and drop".
4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
