Summary: For compatibility, export Excel 2003 spreadsheets by default to XML or formats readable by older spreadsheet software.
Are you transitioning from a different spreadsheet package to Microsoft Excel 2003, or do you need to regularly save information to a software-independent XML format? If so, you might rather have Excel 2003 default to saving spreadsheets using a different file type, such as an XML spreadsheet, a webpage, a comma-delimited text file, or Lotus 1-2-3. To change the default "Save As" filetype:
1. Select "Tools" - "Options".
2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, select the "Transition" tab.
3. Click the pull-down next to "Save Excel files as" to choose a new default file type.
4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
