Summary: Turn off the AutoRecover feature in Microsoft Excel 2003 if you find it annoying and not useful.
If you forget to save your document regularly and a disaster (software crash, computer crash, etc.) causes Microsoft Excel 2003 to close, AutoRecover saves a copy of your spreadsheet every few minutes so that when you restart the software you can recover some of your changes.
However, when AutoRecover operates, it prevents spreadsheet modification for a few seconds while a temporary document is written to disk. If you save your documents often and don't want this automatic recovery option to occur, you can completely disable AutoRecover on a workbook-by-workbook basis.
1. Click "Tools" - "Options".
2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Save" tab.
3. Underneath "Workbook options", check "Disable AutoRecover".
4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
